Year 11 Food Science and Technology students were issued a challenge to choose a favourite book and make a cake to represent the book. This Bake-off Assessment task incorporated their knowledge of baking techniques alongside their imagination and creativity. The creations were displayed at the College during Book Week, as part of the English Creative Conference.
Visitors to the Reading Lounge were asked to vote for their favourite cake as well as the cake that made the best visual link between the book and cake. Congratulations to the two winners:
Most Popular Cake Award went to Mia for The Gruffalo.
Cake and Book Connection Award went to Sienna for Where’s the Green Sheep.
Honourable Mentions to Annabel for Winnie the Pooh and Charlize for Peter Rabbit.
All the students showed great determination and resilience throughout the project, having to persevere when some of the techniques and skills got difficult and to meet the non-negotiable deadline. Thank you to YouTube tutorials for guiding the students in making their characters out of fondant – not an easy thing to do but the results speak for themselves. Congratulations, Year 11s.
